Awards/Ratings

Classified 1er Grand Cru Classé A (Saint-Émilion). Retrospective tasting notes vary: some critics (Wine Advocate/Robert Parker) found the 1982 Ausone less concentrated in vertical tastings, while auction notes (Christie’s) and Decanter describe it as mature and drinking well

Tasting Note

Mature, elegant: dried black cherry, plum and kirsch with leather, tobacco, cedar, dried herbs and forest-floor/earthy notes. Soft, dusty tannins and mineral backbone lead to a long, autumnal finish.

Food Pairing

Roast lamb, beef, venison, mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses; Asian pairings: Peking duck, char siu, Korean bulgogi, Sichuan braised beef.

Production Method

Hand-harvested; varieties fermented separately then blended; aged in French oak barrels using traditional Bordeaux élevage.

Vineyard Info

Tiny 7-hectare estate, longtime Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion; historic property, managed today by the Vauthier family (late 1990s onward).
