Awards/Ratings
James Suckling 98; Wine Advocate (Lisa Perrotti-Brown) 95; Wine Spectator 94; Falstaff 95; widely praised by critics for balance and aging potential
Tasting Note
Lime, grapefruit and white peach with honeysuckle, flinty minerality, toasted almond and subtle oak. Creamy lees texture, bright citrus acidity and chalky phenolics lead to a long, zesty, precise finish with excellent aging potential.
Food Pairing
Western: oyster, lobster, grilled turbot with beurre blanc, roast chicken, creamy mushroom risotto. Asian: sashimi/sushi, miso-glazed cod, tempura, Hainanese chicken, mildly spiced Thai coconut curry.
Production Method
Fruit sourced from cool-climate sites; whole-bunch pressing, barrel fermentation in French oak (c.8 months, ~45% new), 100% malolactic fermentation and lees stirring prior to bottling.
Vineyard Info
Penfolds, founded 1844, launched Yattarna to create an ultra-fine Australian Chardonnay (project began with 1995 vintage; released 1998). Yattarna sources selected cool-climate vineyards across southern Australia.
