By Anderson & Stone

In the world of viticulture, the transition of the seasons brings forth a renewed appreciation for the "monoliths" of the cellar—those rare bottles that define a vineyard, a vintage, and a legacy. For the true enthusiast, wine is not merely a luxury; it is a liquid archive of geography and time.

This month, drawing upon a collective century of expertise, our team has moved beyond the mainstream to select four bottles that represent the absolute pinnacle of their respective terroirs. From the sun-drenched stones of Napa Valley to the hallowed limestone slopes of the Côte de Beaune, these are the Monthly Picks that define the Anderson & Stone standard.

1. The Rarest Jewel: Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020

The Vineyard & Terroir

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the smallest white Grand Cru in Burgundy, and perhaps the most elusive. Nestled entirely within the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, its south-facing orientation and stony, shallow soils produce a Chardonnay of unparalleled richness. Fontaine-Gagnard, a standard-bearer for the region, manages their tiny parcels here with surgical precision. The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as a modern classic—a year of warmth that yielded wines with extraordinary concentration balanced by a spine of crystalline acidity.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is a symphony of power and restraint. On the nose, it offers a breathtaking array of white peach, toasted hazelnuts, and honeysuckle, underpinned by a distinct flinty minerality. The palate is voluminous, almost oily in its texture, yet it is electrified by a vibrant citrus-driven acidity that carries the fruit into a minute-long finish of spice and crushed stones.

The Strength

Exclusivity and Depth. Because Criots is such a small climat, owning a bottle from a vintage as monumental as 2020 is a mark of a truly sophisticated cellar. It possesses the structural "bones" to age for 20+ years.

Awards & Recognition

  • 95-97 Points (Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy)

  • 96 Points (Neal Martin, Vinous)

  • Praised as "one of the most complete whites of the vintage."

Food Pairing

A wine of this magnitude requires a dish of equal luxury. Consider Butter-poached Brittany Lobster or Pan-seared Turbot with a Truffle Beurre Blanc. The wine’s richness effortlessly complements the sweet fattiness of high-end seafood.

2. The Architect of Napa: Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

The Vineyard & Terroir

In Napa Valley, "Las Piedras" (The Stones) is a crown jewel in St. Helena. This site is defined by its ancient, rocky riverbed soil, which forces the vines to struggle, resulting in small berries with immense flavor. Paul Hobbs utilizes these "stones" to create a wine that is more "Old World" in structure than its California neighbors.

Tasting Notes

The 2017 Las Piedras is opaque purple, erupting with scents of crushed blackcurrants, graphite, and dried violets. On the palate, it is a "monumental" wine—full-bodied and structured with firm, gravelly tannins that reflect its rocky origin.

The Strength

Architectural Structure. This is a wine built on mineral tension and tannin quality, making it a favorite for those who appreciate the power of Napa with the elegance of a First Growth.

Awards

Consistently earning 97-98 Points from Robert Parker and James Suckling.

Food Pairing

Dry-aged Wagyu Ribeye or a herb-encrusted rack of lamb.

Raw meat slice on wooden board, surrounded by sprigs of fresh rosemary. Rich red tones contrast with the green herbs.

3. The Soul of the Hill: Pierre Guillemot Corton Grand Cru Le Rognet et Corton 2021

The Vineyard & Terroir

While many look to the Côte de Nuits for Pinot Noir, the "Hill of Corton" produces wines of unique, earthy power. Pierre Guillemot is a traditionalist, and their parcel in Le Rognet sits where the red clay meets limestone. The 2021 vintage was a "vigneron's year"—cooler and more classic—producing wines of transparency and "nervy" energy.

Mist-covered forest path with tall trees and lush green foliage. Soft sunlight filters through the canopy, creating a serene and tranquil mood.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Le Rognet is a return to "Old School" Burgundy. It is translucent ruby, offering a cerebral nose of wild raspberries, forest floor, and rose petals. The palate is lithe and energetic, with savory minerals and a bright, long-lasting red-fruit finish.

The Strength

Transparency. This wine is a pure window into the Corton terroir. It eschews heavy oak for a focus on soil and soul.

Food Pairing

Wild Mushroom Risotto, Roasted Quail, or aged Epoisses cheese.

4. The Master of Puligny: Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet 2022

HK$2,150.00

The Vineyard & Terroir

Etienne Sauzet is arguably the most famous name in Puligny-Montrachet. Champ Canet borders the Meursault-Perrières vineyard, blending the legendary floral elegance of Puligny with the muscular richness of Meursault. The 2022 vintage is a triumph of balance.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Champ Canet is exceptionally "bright." It opens with lemon zest, white lily, and crushed chalk. On the palate, it coats the mouth with yellow orchard fruit and toasted brioche, before being pulled back by a sharp, saline mineral streak.

The Strength

Elegance. This wine bridges the gap between the opulent and the mineral. It is the quintessential "Dinner Party" bottle that never fails to impress.

Food Pairing

Pan-seared Scallops or a Creamy Chicken Fricassée.
